May Day, Labour Day, Mother's Day

Tuesday 28th April

Hi everybody! How are you doing?
This weekend is full of events.

Today is the 1st of May or what the British call May Day. In Great Britain they celebrate the day with May Pole dancing ,Morris dancers, street markets, sports competitions and different shows.
It’s ‘International Labour Day’ all over the world.

We celebrate ‘Mother’s Day’ next Sunday in Spain. Have you bought your mother’s presents yet?

And in Madrid, we celebrate the day of our Community (a ‘Community’ is a  geographic and  administrative division of the Spanish territory).

What did we do last Tuesday?
We finished reading about the Ancient Olympic Games.
We learnt that they were held (celebrated) in honour to Zeus (a Greek god). Their name comes from the plains (area with no mountains – flat) of Olympia, a region in Greece where the first Games took place (were celebrated).
At the ancient Games there was only one sport event: a sprint race. The champion was awarded a wreath of olive branches, the equivalent to a gold medal nowadays.
Only young men who spoke Greek were allowed to (could) participate in the Games. Single women could attend the Games, but they couldn’t take part in (participate in) them.

After that, we learnt and revised prepositions.

We have prepositions of time, place and movement.
To describe movement, we need a verb of movement + a preposition of movement.
He is at the shop (place)
He is going into the shop (movement. He’s entering the shop)
Go –verb of movement / into – preposition of movement.

And we finished the lesson with a song ‘We are the champions’.
This song has become the anthem of successful sport teams around the world.
Do you remember the meaning of these expressions and metaphors in the lyrics?
·         Curtain calls- Who do that? When do they do it?
·         No bed of roses. What school subject is not ‘a bed of roses’ for you?
·         Committed no crime. Where do criminals go when they commit a crime?
·         Fame and fortune. Do you think ‘fame and fortune’ are the most important goals (objectives) in life?
·         Come through. What situations are difficult to come through?
If you answer these questions in writing (with whole sentences; not only one word), you’ll get up to three more points for our games next week. You can write them in your notebooks or on the blog.

Remember to do homework. Reading: ‘Your most exciting sporting moments’ exercises 4a,b,c and d. And the preposition exercises on Photocopy p. 78.
See you on Tuesday.
